The $200 Rule

So my name's Jonathan Wu and I'm graduating this year from La Canada High. Things are changing quickly, all of a sudden I'm responsible to check my bank statements, my credit card statements, my gas usage, summer job obligations, tuition for next fall, I can hardly stand up on my own two feet.

I'm heading off to Tufts University in Boston next fall, eagerly anticipating the new found freedoms but dreading the financial responsibility that comes with this freedom. No more free spending sprees on my parents, no more free meals or easy free flowing money. The anxiety of considering all this got me to thinking on my daily run today....

What if I practiced how to be "frugal" and "responsible" with my money starting now. It is true there's never too early a time to start practicing wise money management. So on this run I got to calculating how much money a month do I really need to get by with some fun but frugality in mind? I came up with a rule $200 a month for the next three months. That means June, July, and August I can only spend up to $200 each month on everything.... gas, food, dates, trips, purchases, etc.

So this is how I am going to keep track of it all and be responsible for myself. I'm going to blog daily or weekly on how my efforts are going starting June 1st after Memorial Day.

so far the balance is a@ $200 lets see if i can make it through June without spending more!

ONE MORE THING. Disclaimer: I am going on a week long trip to Mexico w/ some friends during June that my parents have helped pay for so that week won't be factored into my $200 budgeting expenses.

So far so good. I've written down my goals. Let's see how I do.
